WASHINGTON, DC – Gertrude Stein Democratic Club wishes its members a joyous Juneteenth. 155 years ago today, news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached over a quarter of a million enslaved African Americans in Texas. Though not yet a federal holiday, 47 states and the District of Columbia recognize Juneteenth as a day to commemorate and celebrate the rights and freedoms entitled to everyone in our Nation
Today’s anniversary is a moment that serves as a time for reflection and appreciation, and an opportunity for us all to recommit ourselves to the difficult and ongoing work that is still necessary to achieve full equality for every single American.
The protests following the murder of George Floyd and calls to end unjust policing of Black Americans reminds us all of the inequity that still exists in our communities, and the need for each of us to step up and work to dismantle systemic racism everywhere it exists.
